The Charity Cup was founded in 1998 by Kisakiu Posman and was designed along the same concept as the English F.A. charity cup with modifications to suit the local situation.
In the early years, the competition was played in one day with only the mixed-division, as a curtain raiser for the Charity Cup 90-minute game.
Over the years the event has grown in popularity and has expanded from a one-day competition to a full four-day tournament. Additionally, other divisions were added - a men's division, a women's division and, most recently, an under-15 mixed division for the children.
The annual event takes place over the Easter weekend, starting on Good Friday and ending with the finals and trophy presentation on Easter Monday.
Throughout the years, we have seen the event grow from around 20 teams to almost 100 teams.
The Charity Cup's organizing committee comprises mainly PKA who have partnered up with other volunteers and DJ's from local radio stations (PNG FM, Yumi FM).
The PNG Soccer Charity Trust's has changed it foucs from raising money for diffrent charitiable organisations to a cause that affects all the partisipants of the annual event.
The primary focus of the event is to promote awareness of lifestyle diseases, issues & challenges that the work force of today and tomorrow continue to face due to changes to their lifestyle, brought about by work pressures, living in a urban enviorment and an inability to manage time available after work.
Some of the main lifestyle diseases, issues & challenges people face on a daily basis may include:
These are just to name a few, and can all be addressed if the correct awareness and information was made available to educate all persons at risk of such diseases.
In the past years the events focus was purely on rasing funds for selected beneficiaries which have included the Cheshire Homes, the National Aids Council, the Aitape Disaster Appeal, Susu Mamas, the City Mission, the Sir Buri Kidu Heart Foundation, the St. John's Ambulance, the Women Doctors Association (Lae General Hospital - Accommodation Project) and more recently the KASH Foundation.
The current organizing committee is made up of the following capable volunteers:
1. Sione Kami (PKA)
2. Richard Pono (PKA)
3. Kasty (YUMI FM)
4. Lydia Kanning (PKA)
5. Geno Marjen (PKA)
6. Lelesia Tawi (PKA)
7. Meso Iviopa (PKA)
8. Kathleen Eremas
They have been working together for the past couple of years and have raised tens of thousands of Kina for the needy.
